What Is OnlyFans? Meaning, History & How It Works — OnlyPedia guide

What the name means

“OnlyFans” describes the core idea: a creator’s content is for their paying fans only. It sits behind a paywall rather than on a public feed, and the relationship is direct — fans pay the creator, not an advertiser. When people say someone “has an OnlyFans”, they mean that person sells subscriptions or content on the platform.

How it works, briefly

Creators set a price (free, or $4.99–$49.99 a month) and earn from subscriptions, tips and pay-per-view (PPV) content. OnlyFans takes a 20% fee and pays out the other 80%. Fans create a free account, add a payment card and subscribe to the people they want to follow. For the step-by-step version, read how OnlyFans works.

What people use it for

Most of the money on OnlyFans comes from adult content, and much of the site is 18+. But the platform is also home to personal trainers, musicians, chefs, cosplayers, gamers and lifestyle creators who sell exclusive content or one-to-one access. Fans use it to follow specific people, message them, tip, and unlock exclusive photos and videos. OnlyFans by the numbers

According to Fenix International’s accounts for the year to 30 November 2025, fans paid about $7.8 billion on the platform, creators received about $6.3 billion, and OnlyFans made roughly $1.55 billion in net revenue and $715 million in pre-tax profit — with just 47 employees. There were about 5 million creator accounts, and the company says 5,076 creators have earned more than $1 million since 2016.

OnlyPedia maps a directory of 1 million+ OnlyFans accounts and analyzes a sample of 342,272 active creators in detail: about 31% offer a free subscription and the average paid price is $13.29/month. The full data is in our OnlyFans statistics report.

Is OnlyFans only for adult content?

No, but adult content is what it is known for and where most of the money is. The platform allows explicit content from verified adult creators, and it also hosts non-adult creators who use exactly the same tools. The common thread is the business model: fans pay a creator directly, whatever the content. For platform safety and privacy, see is OnlyFans safe.
