OnlyFans vs Patreon: Which Platform Should Creators Use? — OnlyPedia guide

The deciding question is what you make: Patreon does not allow content depicting sexual activity between real people, while OnlyFans does (within its rules). For explicit adult creators, OnlyFans is the option. For artists, podcasters, writers, educators and other safe-for-work creators, Patreon is usually the better fit: a mainstream brand, membership tiers and a lower headline fee — 10% for creators who launched after 4 August 2025, plus payment processing — against OnlyFans’ flat 20%.

What adult content Patreon allows

Patreon does allow some adult work, with strict limits:

  • Pages with nudity or sexual themes must be marked Adult/18+, and Adult/18+ creators must be ID- and age-verified.
  • Nudity and sexual material must sit behind the paywall, for paying members only; public previews, banners, tier descriptions and free posts must be free of it.
  • Works depicting sexual activity between real people are not permitted. Illustrated, animated and written adult work can be, within the guidelines.
  • Adult/18+ pages show up in search and Explore only for adult members who choose to see them.

So a lingerie photographer, a boudoir artist or an adult illustrator may fit on Patreon; an explicit creator who films with a partner does not. For that, see how to start an OnlyFans.

Fees: 20% vs 10% plus extras

OnlyFans’ 20% is all-in on the creator side. Patreon’s headline 10% (for creators who launched after 4 August 2025) is lower, but payment processing, currency conversion and payout fees come on top, so the total cost is higher than 10% — especially on small memberships, where the fixed per-payment charge weighs more. Creators who launched earlier keep their original plan. There is one more wrinkle: memberships bought inside Patreon’s iOS app go through Apple’s in-app purchase, where Apple takes 30% in the first year of a subscription and 15% after that; Apple has required Patreon to move all creators to this billing by November 2026. Fans who join through the website avoid that fee. OnlyFans’ payouts are explained in how much OnlyFans pays.

Features and how fans pay

Patreon is built around memberships: several tiers at different prices, free members you can later convert, community chats, and a shop for one-off digital products. It suits creators who publish a steady stream of work to a community. OnlyFans is built around one creator and direct interaction: a subscription (or a free page), pay-per-view messages and posts, tips and custom content. Much of the income comes from one-to-one messaging — see OnlyFans pricing and PPV.

Brand, audience and stigma

For a safe-for-work creator, the platform name matters. Fans, sponsors and employers read Patreon as a mainstream membership site; OnlyFans is widely associated with adult content, even though plenty of SFW creators use it. On the other hand, OnlyFans has a much larger base of fans used to paying individual creators, with about $7.8 billion of fan spending in FY2025. Where your audience already is, and what they are comfortable paying for, usually decides it.

Which should you choose?

  • Explicit adult content with real people: OnlyFans (or another adult platform) — Patreon is not an option.
  • Art, podcasts, writing, education, games: Patreon, for its mainstream brand and membership tools.
  • Suggestive but not explicit (lingerie, boudoir, fitness): either can work; Patreon requires an Adult/18+ page and a paywall for nudity.
  • Adult illustrators and writers: Patreon may fit within its guidelines; many also use adult-specific platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Is Patreon like OnlyFans?

Both let fans pay creators for exclusive content, but Patreon is a mainstream membership platform that does not allow content depicting sexual activity between real people. OnlyFans allows explicit adult content within its rules.

Does Patreon allow adult content?

Some. Adult/18+ pages can post nudity and sexual themes behind the paywall, and illustrated or written adult work can be allowed, but works depicting sexual activity between real people are not permitted.

Which takes less, Patreon or OnlyFans?

Patreon’s fee for new creators is 10% plus payment processing and payout fees; OnlyFans takes a flat 20%. Patreon usually costs less overall, though small memberships and iOS in-app purchases narrow the gap.

Can I use Patreon and OnlyFans together?

Yes, as long as each platform only gets content its rules allow — for example SFW work on Patreon and adult content on OnlyFans.
