OnlyFans in 60 seconds
OnlyFans is a paywalled social network. A creator posts photos, videos, text and livestreams to a profile; only fans who subscribe (or pay for a specific item) can see the locked content. Instead of advertising, the platform makes money by taking a cut of every payment. That simple model is why it works for very different creators — it is best known for adult content, but the same tools are used by fitness coaches, musicians, cooks and artists.
There are two sides to every account: fans, who pay, and creators, who earn. Anyone over 18 can be a fan; creators must also pass identity and age verification before they can earn.
The three ways money moves
| Payment | What the fan gets | Who sets the price |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription | Access to everything posted on the creator’s feed while subscribed. Renews automatically every month unless turned off. | Creator: free or $4.99–$49.99/month, with optional 3-, 6- or 12-month bundles |
| Tip | A one-off payment to support the creator, often with a message or request. | Fan (within platform limits) |
| Pay-per-view (PPV) | Unlocks a specific locked post or a media message sent to the fan’s inbox. | Creator, per item |
On most pages the subscription is only part of the story: many creators earn more from PPV messages and tips than from the monthly fee. That is also why so many pages are free — about 31% of the creators in OnlyPedia’s sample — and monetize through PPV instead.
How it works for fans
- Create an account with an email address (or a social login). Browsing public profiles is free.
- Add a payment card. OnlyFans takes debit and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Discover) with 3-D Secure; it does not take PayPal. You can also top up a wallet balance. Depending on where you live, you may be asked to confirm your age first.
- Subscribe to a creator. Paid subscriptions renew monthly until you switch auto-renew off; free subscriptions cost nothing.
- Interact: like and comment on posts, send direct messages, tip, and unlock PPV content you want.
The detailed walkthrough is in how OnlyFans works for viewers, and payment options are covered in OnlyFans payment methods. You can find creators by niche in OnlyPedia’s category directory.
How it works for creators
- Sign up and verify. Creators submit a government ID and a selfie so OnlyFans can confirm they are adults, then add payout (bank) details and tax information.
- Set up the page: profile photo, banner, bio, and a subscription price (or free).
- Post and message. Content goes on the feed (visible to subscribers), in locked PPV posts, or in direct messages — individually or as mass messages.
- Get paid. Earnings land in the creator balance minus the 20% fee, stay pending for a short holding period, and can then be withdrawn once the balance reaches the minimum payout (typically $20).
Opening a creator account costs nothing, and the platform only earns when the creator does. The full payout rules are in how much OnlyFans pays; a setup checklist is in how to start an OnlyFans.
How much OnlyFans costs
Joining is free. What you spend depends entirely on the creators you follow: subscription prices range from free to $49.99 a month, and across the paid pages OnlyPedia tracks the average is about $13.29 per month. Tips and PPV are optional extras that can add up quickly, so it helps to decide on a budget before you start. The full breakdown, including taxes and bank fees, is in how much OnlyFans costs. The price distribution is charted in our OnlyFans statistics report.
Billing and privacy: what to know
OnlyFans does not use a disguised billing name. Charges generally appear on card and bank statements under the OnlyFans name (for example “ONLYFANS.COM”, sometimes abbreviated to “OF”) or under its operator, Fenix International. The exact wording depends on your bank.
On the privacy side, creators see your username, display name and avatar — not your real name, email address or card details — and other fans cannot see who you subscribe to. More detail: what OnlyFans looks like on a bank statement and what OnlyFans creators can see about you.
Rules that shape the platform
- 18+ only. Every creator is ID-verified, and anyone who appears in a creator’s content must be verified too.
- Content stays on the platform. Fans may not download and redistribute creators’ content; doing so breaks the Terms of Service and copyright law.
- Payments go through OnlyFans. Taking payment off-platform for content sold there is against the rules and removes the platform’s buyer and seller protections.
- Chargebacks are treated seriously. Disputing a charge with your bank instead of contacting support usually leads to the account being banned — see OnlyFans refunds.
Who OnlyFans is for
For creators, OnlyFans is a way to earn directly from an audience without an algorithm or advertisers deciding what pays. The trade-off is that the platform brings little discovery of its own, so creators have to bring their audience from social media — see how to promote an OnlyFans. For fans, it offers closer, paid access to specific people. To see who is on the platform and what they charge, browse OnlyPedia’s directory or start with what OnlyFans is.
Frequently asked questions
Does it cost money to browse OnlyFans?
No. Creating an account and browsing public profiles is free. You only pay when you subscribe to a paid page, tip, or unlock pay-per-view content. Many creators offer free subscriptions.
How do OnlyFans creators make money?
From monthly subscriptions, tips and pay-per-view posts and messages. OnlyFans keeps 20% of each payment and the creator receives 80%.
What does OnlyFans look like on a bank statement?
Charges generally show the OnlyFans name (such as ONLYFANS.COM or OF) or the operator, Fenix International. OnlyFans does not use a disguised or generic billing name; the exact text depends on your bank.
Can creators see my real name?
No. Creators see your username, display name, avatar and your activity on their page, but not your real name, email address or payment details.
Is there an OnlyFans app?
There is no official OnlyFans app for fans in the Apple App Store or Google Play, because store rules restrict adult content. OnlyFans works in any mobile browser and can be added to your home screen.
Do OnlyFans subscriptions renew automatically?
Paid subscriptions renew automatically each month until you switch off auto-renew on the creator’s profile or in your subscriptions list. You keep access until the end of the period you already paid for.
